Bay Area people praise themselves on having so much diversity in the area where they are raised. I’ve found that their diversity is different from places like areas in Southern California where you would find traditional Filipino, Persian, Black, Korean, Chinese, Mexican communities etc. 2nd generation children in the Bay grow up with many different races but I’ve come across many who do not speak or understand their ethnic language. Furthermore I’ve found that many first generation parents of the Bay Area fail to expose their children to their root culture as well as fail to encourage them to learn the language from where they had migrated from; an American or a “white” way of life is what is encouraged. As a result, the “diversity” cultivated in the Bay Area is one of a homogeneous white American approved type; fobs are shunned, articulate American speech is praised, and cultural identity is not of a foreign country but of the newly created conformed and assimilated culture found in that part of Northern California. Is this blurring of ethnic background the ideal American?
